If you’re like most woodworkers, you probably think of a band saw as something you need for cutting through large pieces of wood. But, while the band saw is most often used for this purpose, it’s a powerful tool you can also use for other woodworking projects as well.
Band saw machines are either circular saws or single-edged, or even combination, blades. They generally use thicker, stiffer blades to cut thicker, more durable cuts than most band saw blades do. They also take up more power than the circular band saw to cut larger gaps. Some of the more popular brands include Bosch, Milwaukee, Bosch, Komatsu, Kettler, and Husky.
While it’s fairly obvious that a band saw can be used for woodworking tasks, there are some things you might not have realized about them, particularly if you aren’t planning on making use of your band saw as much as you need to. Read on to learn about some of the things you can do with your band saw.
Woodworkers often use their band saw to cut wood, but many of them also use it to cut thin plywood and composite boards. This may seem counterintuitive, but cutting a board to size often requires much less cutting power and speed than cutting a thick piece of solid wood. You’ll have to know what you’re doing, of course, but cutting a single thin sheet of plywood or composite board at a time takes very little power. If you can’t manage to finish one panel, simply switch to cutting the next one. This is especially true of composite boards, which you can cut into sections by using your band saw in different directions.
Of course, cutting wood also has another benefit: cutting your wood will make it easier to sand, stain, and finish later. If you find a piece of wood you want to work with, simply run your saw across it with the grain of the wood to get a nice flat cut. Then sand it with a coarse grit sandpaper and your final step will be to apply a finishing product such as oil or water based varnish to make it shiny.
As you can see, a band saw is a versatile piece of woodworking machinery. Whether you’re looking to cut wood, plywood, composite, you can use it to accomplish just about any task.
